Book review: John Hearne, Architect of the 1937 Constitution of Ireland by Eugene Broderick

Visitors to Waterford city centre may be surprised when they walk past a bust of a former native who is utterly unfamiliar to most Irish people. Underneath the bust are the words "John J Hearne 1893-1969 – Architect of the 1937 Constitution". It is difficult to think of any comparable monument to an Irish civil servant. This lasting monument to John Hearne has now been complemented by this fine biography written by Eugene Broderick, another Waterford native.
