Abstract
In this paper, recent trends in U.S. commercial aviation are examined, so that an assessment may be made of the impact of the passage of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 on the industry and also on the national airways system. The key planning issues for airlines and airports are highlighted and placed in an Irish context to aid the planning strategies for a more competitive European environment.
