Abstract
The rich tradition in the Irish language that fl ourished between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in Oirghialla (Oriel) — an area which,Oirghialla (Oriel) — an area which,Oirghialla for the purposes of Irish literature, covers the present-day counties of Armagh, Louth and south Down, as well as north Meath and parts of Monaghan and Cavan — was a subject that was particularly dear to Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich (1923–1990).
