Abstract
This article explains what Herodotus means when he says that Croesus was the first oriental king to subjugate Greek cities, although he later mentions earlier kings who did precisely that. It argues that it is a common feature of paratactic style that a statement to which there are only rather trivial exceptions is made first without any qualification.
