Abstract
Tá ar a laghad ceithre cinn déag de dhánta Gaeilge tagtha anuas chugainn a cumadh in ómós d’Eoghan Mór Ó Néill, nó Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill (ob. 1649) fé mar is fearr aithne air. Caointe nó marbhnaí iarbháis is ea an formhór mór acu seo, ina measc ceann dar tús Ar ghoin siad, ar mharbh siad, an tréanfhear Eoghan Ruadh?, aistriúchán Gaeilge ar Did they dare, did they dare, to slay Eoghan Ruadh O’Neill?, bailéad Béarla ar bhás an fhir a d’fhoilsigh Tomás Dáibhís sa nuachtán The Nation (19 Samhain 1842). Dá éagmais sin, i gcás na sraithe de dhánta polaitiúla a cumadh idir 1640 agus 1660 – iad san is príomhfhoinse Ghaeilge do stair na mblianta san in Éirinn – díríonn an té a chum An Síogaí Rómhánach go speisialta ar Ó Néill sa tslí is gur mheas eagarthóir an dáin gurb é atá ann ina iomláine (‘in large part’) ná ‘a lament for the death of Eoghan Ruadh’.1 Adhmholadh seochas marbhna is bunús leis an dán céanna de réir na hanailíse is déanaí atá déanta air2 agus cé nárbh fhéidir an méid sin a áiteamh i dtaobh an téacs atá curtha in eagar thíos dar tús A Éamainn, an agad féin!, níl aon amhras ann ná go raibh ardmheas ag an bhfile ar Eoghan Ruadh. Go deimhin, chífear nach foláir nó chum sé a dhán nuair a bhí an tUltach fir in airde a láin mar cheannaire éifeachtach Gaelach agus mar shaighdiúir cumasach míleata. ----This article provides an edition of a poem beginning A Éamainn, an agad féin! which is preserved today in National Library of Scotland MS Adv. 72.1.42. The focus of its anonymous author is twofold, namely (i) to praise Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill (ob. 1649), nephew of Aodh Ó Néill, second Earl of Tyrone, for his extraordinary martial abilities, particularly throughout the 1640s following his return to Ireland from Spanish Flanders in July 1642; (ii) to upbraid the audacity of ‘Éamann’ for his criticism of Piaras Feiritéar, poet and military leader from the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry, who himself composed a poem in support of Ó Néill’s auspicious military credentials.
