Abstract
This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of a scoping review conducted to examine the landscape of LGBTQ health research in Ireland. Utilising five databases, a rigorous search strategy employing selected keywords related to LGBTQ communities and health conditions was implemented. The search yielded 1197 unique references, which were initially screened by title and abstract. Following this, 167 articles underwent full-text screening, resulting in 59 papers being selected for detailed review and analysis. Findings will be organised around key themes that emerged, including sexual health and HIV, mental health, substance use, and other miscellaneous health issues. Attention will be given to specific populations within the LGBTQ community that have been the focus of research, such as gay and bisexual men, transgender individuals, and LGBTQ youth. Notable gaps in existing research will also be highlighted, particularly the lack of studies addressing the health needs of lesbian and bisexual women, older LGBTQ adults, and intersectional perspectives. This is the first comprehensive review of LGBTQ+ health research in Ireland and will conclude with a discussion on implications of these findings for future research, emphasising the need for more inclusive research to inform effective health interventions and policies for LGBTQ populations in Ireland.
