Abstract
Data graphics had to be invented: The idea of using diagrams to represent numerical data emerged only toward the end of the 18th century. While graphs of mathematical functions existed before this time, it fell to a Scottish scoundrel, William Playfair, to popularize the idea of graphically representing empirical data in all of their messiness.
