Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of corporate governance, with particular emphasis on governance research with an Irish perspective. Various definitions of corporate governance are examined, followed by a summary of the mechanisms of governance, both internal and external. The various theories applied in prior governance research are discussed. This is followed by a summary of prior empirical and other governance research. For reasons of space, only prior research with an Irish angle is reviewed. This is a fraction of the prior research on governance internationally, and governance researchers are encouraged to read more widely to obtain a more comprehensive view of prior governance research. The chapter concludes with some suggestions for further research.
